I have an Elan Amex through my local bank. My wallet was stolen and my charges D $400 at Macy's.

Elan immediately closed my card, reversed the charge and immediately issued me a new account and card. Better than Macy's who were less than cooperative to catch this guy or allowed him to use every credit card I have to purchase gift cards one after the other without their store employee batting an eyelash that this man was not a woman! They were very helpful on the phone (and I'm a pain in the butt, too). No issues.

I pay my card on time and early. No negatives.

I have had my card for less than a year with them. Online account is good.

Reason of review: Good customer service.

My card was recently assumed by Elan from a credit union affinity account that I'd been doing business for years. In the few months Elan has serviced the account, I've been assessed a late fee twice.

The first time it was reversed at my request, along with $4.16 in interest that accrued during the credit/reversal process, again, though, only by request.

The next time I was told the $27 late was assessed because I had paid after their 7 p.m. CT cutoff for crediting accounts on the due date. So though I paid on the due date, not by their cutoff time.

I was unaware of this policy since my account is electronic only. When I read the tiny fine print (6 point type) in the electronic statement, I see that indeed that policy is stated. It actually says 5 p.m. not 7 p.m.

No other card that I use has that old "end of business day" practice. It's a throw-back to before we could transfer funds electronically. Back then, all companies used the practice and you also had to judge when your check would be delivered and processed, since that's what a few of the companies went by rather than whether you mailed it before the due date. I quit one company that pretty regularly took 5 to 7 days to process you check so you were always late.

It seemed like a "hidden" cost of having an account with them. That's what I feel about Elan. It's a late fee, $27, plus interest on the fee, minimum $2. And at their discretion when they decide to credit your payment.

Also my messages from Elan go to a message center on the account. They do not come to my e-mail so it can be days or weeks before you'd get a notice or see a reply.

There are way better credit card companies out there, though it seems Elan is absorbing lots of smaller companies supposedly to say them money in processing accounts while trying to pretend the customer is still doing business with the original company because that name is on your credit card.

But beware the policies were changed without your knowledge and you're dealing with by-the-script personnel now. For me, time to drop the card.
